I was born in a small Iowa hospital during a terrible snowstorm. I grew up on a farm in Hardin County, Iowa, and as soon as I could escaped for the big city. After living in Houston and Silicon Valley I finally landed in northern Virginia — close enough to Yankee lands to have enlightened social policy, far enough below the Mason-Dixon line to have authentic stir-fried Southern craziness.

I hold undergraduate and graduate degrees in computer science. I was invited to speak on a creation of mine, language-theoretic security, at Black Hat USA, and I may have been the first DEF CON speaker to warn about the dangers of electronic voting.
